The Company recruiting for the Business Development Manager:

Our client is a small but well-established and growing export company bringing a totally unique composite technology to military, industrial, space and retail sectors worldwide. The technology is genuinely dynamic & innovative and secures the attention of specifiers and end-users alike. As they continue to introduce the products into new countries and sectors, the role brings the buzz of working for a start-up, but with the foundation of years of growth and success behind them. Their IP-protected technology has no direct competition, you really would be working with a completely distinctive product.

Growth into new sectors means they need a Business Development Manager to join the team and help them expand their worldwide network of Distributors, OEM’s and Integrators who can apply their technology into the industrial sector.

You must have experience of B2B sales of technical products or technology into the industrial sector. A mature demeanour is required to able to present the products professionally to Distributors and specifiers, and you must be prepared to travel internationally; it is anticipated this will develop into c.50% of the time.

All languages are beneficial, but fluency in foreign languages is not essential. Instead, if you are a team player and can demonstrate the energy, ambition and integrity to work independently around the globe, we welcome your application.

The Role of the Business Development Manager:

The primary responsibilities of the Business Development Manager are to deliver sales growth targets in the international Industrial B2B sector. This would be done by identifying opportunities for the products along with the associated routes to market, make the approaches and provide technical, commercial and marketing support to a range of global distributors, OEM’s and integrators in order to deliver sales targets.

Reporting to the Sales Manager, you will be expected to manage and drive current and new commercial business activity through effective management of, and support to, channel partnerships. As part of a small sales team in a fast-growing and evolving business, a degree of flexibility will be needed in terms of role and responsibilities.

Our client operates globally in military, industrial and retail markets. The role will require considerable international travel and interaction with both government and commercial organisations. 

Primary Responsibilities

  • Provide support to Distributors in marketing the products to customers, by:
    • Delivering marketing and deployment training to their staff and customers,
    • Providing Marketing and Technical support and materials as required,
    • Providing support at Trade Shows and other marketing events.
  • Identifying and prioritising OEM’s and integrators that would value the product offering and make opening approaches to engage in commercial discussions.
  • Evaluate the commercial opportunities and assemble appropriate business development plans.
  • Liaise with technical colleagues with regard to the development or specification of products for specific customers. 
  • Monitor Distributors’ activity levels and sales, providing monthly reports to the Sales Manager.
  • Manage and interpret OEM and integrator requirements and provide feedback to the Sales Manager.
  • Progress ad hoc sales opportunities.
  • Provide relevant customer information to the Sales Office Manager.
  • Identify and secure relevant marketing literature required to support the commercial activity.
  • Identify and attend relevant international trade shows that will deliver sales channels or partnerships for the technology.
  • Accurately maintain the CRM and other records and databases.

  • Sales delivered against budget.
  • Distributor sales performance.
  • Growth in number of OEM/ Integrator relationships. 
  • Delivering strong long-term commercial relationships.
  • Market awareness of the Technology.
  • Geographical breadth of sales.
  • Management of CRM and other internal systems.
  • Communication with Sales Manager and Sales office.
  • Effective use of time.

Primary Skills required

  • Ambitious, experienced and enthusiastic sales professional.
  • International experience selling technical B2B products into the industrial sector is essential.
  • The confidence to work independently in an international sales environment.
  • Ideally with a Technical background, with the attention to detail that ensures  customers’ requirements are conveyed accurately to the in-house Technical team.
  • A good team player who is adaptable as necessary to changing circumstances.
  • Strong presentation skills, combined with a logical approach to strategic issues.
  • High levels of personal motivation.
  • Excellent written and spoken communication skills, with calm professional demeanour.
  • Ability to travel extensively outside the UK.
  • Fluency in a foreign language would be beneficial.

Our client is selling B2B products into technical applications, so lead times to sales success can be long. It is therefore imperative the candidate appreciates the role is primarily one of channel  identification, then the support, management, monitoring and commitment to the long term success of that opportunity, and not a role delivering the short-term ‘hit’ of frequently closed one-off sales. Candidates must be motivated by nurturing mutually beneficial partnerships that lead to steady year-on-year growth.

Long-term career progression into a management role would be open to the right candidate.

Location should be in reasonable driving distance of Lymington, Hampshire.  Once induction is satisfactorily completed, and when not travelling, home-working with regular visits to the Lymington office is the normal approach used by our clients’ BDM’s.
